How long until it's safe to drive after a new windshield?
Short answer
Usually about an hour, but it depends on the adhesive and the weather. Your windshield is glued in with urethane, and it has to cure enough to hold the glass in place and support your airbags in a crash before the car is safe to drive. This is called the safe drive-away time, and we tell you exactly what yours is before we leave.
Why there is a wait at all
A modern windshield is structural. In a crash it helps the roof hold its shape and gives the passenger airbag something to push against. The urethane adhesive has to reach enough strength to do that job. Federal crash-safety standards (FMVSS 208 and 212) are what the adhesive is engineered to meet.
How long it actually takes
Most modern urethanes specify a minimum safe drive-away time of around one hour under normal conditions. Cold or very humid weather can make it longer. The real number is set by the adhesive maker for the conditions on the day, which is why a careful installer tells you a specific time instead of a guess.
